Laravel for Scalable Web Apps: Architecture Decisions That Matter

Laravel is beautiful for rapid prototyping, but scaling it beyond 1,000 concurrent connections requires deliberate architectural shifts. Here is how we build Laravel systems that do not choke under load.

Offloading the Main Thread

PHP is synchronous and blocking. The most critical architectural decision we implement in any enterprise Laravel build is removing heavy operations—such as sending emails, generating PDFs, or third-party API calls—from the primary HTTP request lifecycle.

Horizon and Redis Queues

Instead of executing a 3-second API call while the user stares at a loading spinner, we dispatch a Job to a Redis queue. Laravel Horizon allows us to configure multiple queue workers, scaling processing power horizontally while keeping the frontend UI instantly responsive.

Database Bottlenecks: N+1 Problems

Eloquent ORM is a double-edged sword. Its expressive syntax obscures the underlying SQL queries. Querying 50 users and silently fetching their individual profiles inside a loop generates 51 database hits instead of 2. We mandate strict eager loading (`with()`) and utilize Laravel Telescope to enforce query budgets on local environments.

Common Mistakes

  • File-Based Sessions: Using default `file` session drivers in a load-balanced environment causes users to log out randomly. Use Redis or Memcached sessions.
  • Storing business logic in Controllers: Controllers should only handle routing and HTTP responses. Business logic belongs in Action classes or Services to ensure reusability via CLI or API.

Practical Checklist

  • Step 1: Transition `CACHE_DRIVER`, `SESSION_DRIVER`, and `QUEUE_CONNECTION` from file/sync to `redis`.
  • Step 2: Install `barryvdh/laravel-debugbar` locally to hunt down and destroy N+1 queries.
  • Step 3: Configure Laravel Octane using Swoole or RoadRunner to persist the application state in memory between requests.
